One of the great resources you should take advantage of is the volunteering program at SBU School of Dental Medicine. You will be able to observe General Dentistry, Pediatrics, Periodontics, and Orthodontics.
The dental school only accepts volunteers at the beginning of each semester. The process can take a few weeks to complete so I highly suggest you start the process a few months before the semester begins.
3) Make sure you fulfill all the health requirements for volunteering.
4) After your application is approved, arrange an orientation date with the hospital. You must attend this orientation before you apply to volunteer at the Dental School.
5) After you have completed all your forms and orientation, look at your schedule for next semester to see when you can volunteer.
The choices are: Mon-Thurs from 10-1 OR 2-5. There is NO volunteering on Friday or the weekend.
6) Typically you will email Margaret Bakos a week before the semester begins. She is the one that will help you make your schedule and she will keep all the hours you volunteered. You will provide her the necessary information:
-Let her know if this is your first time applying to volunteer at the dental school or if you have already volunteered the previous semester, let her know which specialities you have been to.
-Give her 2 time slot choices that would work for you.
This is a great opportunity for all pre-dental students! If you have any questions please let any of us know.
